Opalescent glass is, thankfully, a very well-documented subject; due to the fact that many collectors of Goofus glass have tended to become quite broadband and venture far a field in their lust for objects bearing the slightest touch of Goofus decoration, I have included this aspect of the hobby on my website. I heartily recommend to anyone interested in this category of glass collecting to obtain a copy of the "Standard Encyclopedia of Opalescent Glass" - Now in its 3rd Edition - by Bill Edwards. The illustrations are marvelous and have been a great help in sharpening up our identification of various pieces. We refer to a select few of the many pieces created over the past century simply as having "Goofus decoration", or, "Goofus treatment". Be sure to always state the piece is Opalescent first - and then add "with Goofus decoration". It is simply not technically correct to call these objects "Goofus glass" in the strict sense of the word. Similarly, milk glass from time to time bears Goofus decoration. Milk glass with Goofus decoration is again, not what I like to consider mainline Goofus either. If you would care to see these objects, click HERE These opalescent beauties are quite stunning and I personally treasure them highly myself. I personally have quite a few pieces displayed in my home. The little we know about Goofus decorated glass objects always seems to come from books on other glass collectibles. How I wish these knowledgeable authors with access to old resources would now turn to mainstream, vintage old Goofus. |
